Graduate Studies

Florida State University's Department of Anthropology offers both Ph.D. and M.A./M.S. programs, providing comprehensive training across archaeology, biological anthropology and cultural anthropology. The program emphasizes advanced research and prepares students for academic and professional careers. Faculty expertise spans a diverse range of anthropological subfields, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Graduate students have access to extensive research facilities and are encouraged to engage in fieldwork and community-based projects. The department supports students through various funding opportunities, including teaching and research assistantships. We also have a long tradition community built around our shared love of people that we celebrate at the annual Hale G. Smith Pig Roast in the fall semester and Dailey-Doran Fish Fry in the spring.

Graduate Degree Programs

Our graduate program caters to students whose interests are within the fields of archaeology, cultural anthropology and biological anthropology, but also those who are looking for hybrid training in bio-cultural or medical anthropology. All students begin with three core seminars in archaeology, cultural anthropology and biological anthropology, then work with their graduate adviser to choose a pathway toward fulfilling their other course requirements. These include strengths in methods, including cognitive approaches and geospatial archaeology. It is a general policy of the department to admit only full-time students. Most accepted Ph.D. students receive funding to defray the cost of their graduate education.
