 Responsibilities

The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Biocultural Anthropology. This position is on a 9-month contract. Assistant Professors teach a 2-2 load, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, conduct research, and contribute to the shared governance of the department and university. Primary teaching duties will include courses required for the undergraduate major, courses that satisfy the Liberal Studies for the 21st Century undergraduate requirements and combined upper-division/graduate courses on topics in the candidate’s research area.

The Department of Anthropology, with the support of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, is expanding its role in the research and teaching mission of the University, which has made it a goal to continue to be one of the top 20 Public Carnegie Research I universities in the country. The Department has traditional strengths in the archaeology of the Americas and physical anthropology. Currently undergoing a phase of dynamic growth and with a thriving Master’s Program, we are seeking to augment extant teaching and research strengths in conjunction with reopening our PhD program.

 Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in Anthropology at time of appointment. Applicants will have a demonstrated record of excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and incorporating students into research opportunities through an active research program. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to motivate and inspire students from diverse backgrounds, are essential.

We are especially interested in receiving applications from scholars whose work involves an active ethnographic component. Topical areas of interest include health related issues, climate change, human-environment interactions, and the intersections of these. Within these parameters, geographic focus of research is open.

 Other Information

We seek to build a network of scholars who will support the ongoing work in which we are engaged and to set a path forward as we grow these areas of critical study into regional and national strengths. To this latter point, this hiring initiative is aligned with several strategic priorities in our department and college including efforts to attract and retain high-quality, diverse students, faculty, and staff. We seek scholars who value an inclusive campus culture and a global mindset, who enhance applied learning and who advance research and scholarly activities. Ideal candidates will organize and capitalize on key partnerships across campus and the city and increase community building locally, regionally, and/or globally.

Given our commitment to community engagement and engaged scholarship we seek to appoint faculty who are deeply embedded in the communities they study. The FSU Department of Anthropology intends to foster a strong sense of community, mutual support, and mentorship that will aid in the development and retention of all current and future faculty. By encouraging a strong cohort of faculty, all faculty, staff, and students will benefit from and be made better by our commitment to access, equity, and diversity.
